Coal Power Plant

COAL COUNTRY is a dramatic look at modern coal mining. We get to know working miners along with activists who are battling coal companies in Appalachia. We hear from miners and coal company officials, who are concerned about jobs and the economy and believe they are acting responsibly in bringing power to the American people. Both sides in this conflict claim that history is on their side. Families have lived in the region for generations, and most have ancestors who worked in the mines. Everyone shares a deep love for the land, but MTR (Mountain Top Removal mining which has leveled over 500 Appalachian mountains) is tearing them apart. We need to understand the meaning behind promises of “cheap energy” and “clean coal.” Are they achievable? At what cost? Are there alternatives to our energy future?

“A balanced, sober look at the reality of coal; both the good news and the bad, and the staggering phenomenon that is mountain top mining. It not only reminds you what it takes to turn your lights on, it’ll make sure you remember to turn them off when you leave the room.”
Peter Horton, director.

Time for Lunch logo

The need for real school food has never been greater. Today, one in four children is overweight or obese, and one in three will develop diabetes in his or her lifetime. In the face of this crisis, our schools are financially struggling to feed children anything but the overly processed fast food that endangers their health. For many children, school lunch is their only guaranteed meal of the day. Right now, those children are forced to choose between going hungry and being unhealthy.

We can do better.

Read more about
Slow Food’s Time for Lunch Policy Platform

What:
National Eat-In & Day of Action
More than 200 chapters across the nation will join us in inviting civic groups, educators, PTA groups, clergy, school garden and urban agriculture advocates, growers, local officials and legislators to sit down together to have this important conversation about getting real food into school lunch programs.

We are spreading the word to our friends, families and neighbors too.

This will be a moment to send a clear message to our nation’s leaders that our children deserve better school lunches.

When: Monday, September 7, 1-4 pm

Where: Mellon Park

COMMUNAL PICNIC: Bring a chair, a potluck dish to share, your plate, implements and a cloth. We will have some tables. More folding tables are welcome.

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.

This is a National Eat-in and Day of Action:

That means that we also want to make a dramatic statement, so our campaign gets noticed.

We will all use our cell phones to call legislators during the event, phone numbers and talking points provided. All will be asked to sign the Slow Food petition: I believe that change can’t wait: It’s time to provide America’s children with REAL FOOD at school.

Here are the details about James Perry and the event in Pittsburgh, August 14, 2009, 5:30-7:30 at the Firehouse in the Strip District. (RSVP on Facebook)

We have all watched the post-Katrina recovery of New Orleans from afar, and some of us have been personally involved. Whatever your relationship to this place, you have a unique opportunity to meet an inspiring, hard-working, brilliant and NOLA born and bred change-agent who is running for Mayor – James Perry. Let’s welcome James to town by showing him that Pittsburghers care about the future of New Orleans on Friday, August 14th.

The Perry campaign will welcome contributions large and small.

He will be joined at the fundraiser by Melissa Harris-Lacewell, an associate professor of politics and African-American studies at Princeton University, who co-authored a piece in The Nation magazine with James this Spring. Harris-Lacewell is a regular contributor to The Nation and also TheGrio.com, as well as a frequent commentator for MSNBC and CNN.

James Perry is currently the Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center and a candidate for Mayor of New Orleans. Mr. Perry has worked tirelessly to ensure equal housing opportunities for all citizens of New Orleans. Friends of P2PAC,
Both of the P2PAC endorsed candidates for City Council edged out their opponents in a pair of tightly-contested races.  Natalia Rudiak, District 4, and Daniel Lavelle, District 6, will be on the ballot in November after victory in yesterday’s Democratic primary.  Congratulations, Natalia and Daniel!

Please join us for a celebration on Thursday, June 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the New Amsterdam Pub (Butler Street in Lawrenceville) with our candidates.

If you ever wondered about your power as a contributor, we hope that our success in this campaign demonstrates that together we can influence the outcomes of elections!  Have you given to the challenge?  If you want to see more victories for progressive candidates who support social and economic justice, donate to the campaign challenge today! We are well on our way to reaching our goal of raising another $2009 by the end of May.  Your contribution can help get us there.

Click here to visit The Point $2009 in 2009 Challenge

We would also like to congratulate P2PAC endorsed candidates Hugh McGough for Court of Common Pleas and Susan Banahasky for District Magistrate in the 6th and 9th Wards for running strong campaigns.  Both Susan and Hugh are leaders who we believe in and, although they did not win their races on Tuesday, we know that they will continue to be an asset to our City for years to come..

With your help, we will continue to identify and support socially progressive candidates to move our city and county forward.  Please, join us at our event on June 4th and celebrate our victory!  And join us in our commitment to progress in Pittsburgh!
