  1. In the Sunday Forum Section, the Post-Gazette posted an entry from the Allegheny Institute’s blog blaming unions for causing poverty in Pittsburgh (See “Pittsburgh 5th Poorest Big City”). In fact, 28 continuous years of union busting created the poverty in our region. There are no comparisons between the status of union workers and nonunion workers that do not evidence a definite advantage of the former over the later in benefits, salaries, pensions, etc. Nevertheless, many union workers are watching these benefits eliminated after retirement while CEOs continue to thrive. Studies show that wages are lower in our region than in comparable sized cities. Combine that with the attempt to outsource every possible career/job to low wage locations across the globe and you have a middle class sinking into poverty.
Pittsburgh’s poverty arose in a nonunion climate and the article conflates the few union organized city/county workers with the vast majority of workers in our region who are not organized. Too many current and former residents of Pittsburgh, many of whom fled to find better jobs in other regions, remember that our parents could afford a much better standard of living on one paycheck with only a high school education. They were organized and Pittsburgh’s middle class was healthy. However, the destruction of unions has had a negative impact on the economic situation of workers in the U.S.; Pittsburgh was a canary in the coalmine in the late 70s. This is trickle-down economics at its finest, more poverty for workers.
