PA Superdelegate Update
| May 1, 2008 | Posted by mmp under 2008 Primary Election April, Endorsements, Pennsylvania |
A few months ago, Mr. Super reminded us that “There are no undecided superdelegates–just undeclared ones.” In otherwords, superdelegates–like most of the rest of us–have an idea who they personally support, but want to wait for the most opportune time to declare that support (or maybe they are hoping that they won’t have to declare their support until after a nominee is determined.)
With only a few states left to vote, the outcome is already becoming clear. Clinton cannot earn enough pledged delegates to overtake Obama’s lead, and Obama cannot win enough pledged delegates to put him over the top without more superdelegate endorsements. Since voting began, Obama has been gradually chipping away at Clinton’s superdelegate lead. (Demconwatch is also keeping track of superdelegates who will vote for the pledged delegate leader once voting ends.)
Barack Obama got some groundbreaking news today when former DNC Chair Joe Andrew changed his support from Clinton to Obama. This high-profile endorsement may send a signal to other Supers that it’s time to bring the nomination to its conclusion and unite behind a Democratic nominee in order to beat “100-year” John McCain.
What’s happening here in Pennsylvania? The most recent news is that yesterday, DNC Member and PA AFL-CIO President Bill George gave Clinton his endorsement, adding that he will be 100% behind Senator Obama if he wins the nomination. On June 7, State Democratic Committee will be electing 3 more superdelegates to the list.
Here’s where we are with the rest of PA’s superdelegates:

Looks like these lists might be mislabeled, with the bottom group being Obama delegates (judging from Bob Casey’s presence, an Obama supporter). As written, it looks like there are TWO groups of Clinton delegates.
Whoops. Thanks, Julie, fixed that mistake. Although, Clinton’s overwhelming lead among PA’s supers makes me think that maybe she SHOULD have two lists.
