There are some candidates, and progressive ones too, in the race for PA’s 3rd Congressional District, which is currently held by republican Phil English.
PA’s 3rd Congressional district covers:
- Erie County
- Crawford County
- Mercer County
- Warren County
- Butler County
- Armstrong County
The democrats running in the primary include (from this article in Sharon Herald):
- Steven Porter
- Ran as a democrat in 2006 is running as an independent.
- Kyle Foust
- Erie County Councilman Kyle Foust focused on his elected experience and cited his family background, including his father who once chaired Erie County’s Democratic party and was a councilman.
- Tom Myers
- The 39-year-old from Millcreek Township, Erie County, said being in Congress is about making laws, and he has the experience to craft legislation that will help families instead of hurting them. “We have enough bad laws on the books.”
- Mike Waltner
- Mike Waltner, 32, a lay minister from Erie, said he was raised by his grandmother with no father in the picture and worked three jobs through college and seminary.
- Kathy Dahlkemper
- Kathy Dahlkemper believes her depth and breadth of experience makes her the best candidate. At age 49, she is director of the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park and works with a landscaping company. She also worked in health care, owned a small business, started a nonprofit organization and volunteered with her church and school

About Progress: |

My personal opinion on this race is that Foust is the best overall candidate. Porter has no chance, and can only “Nader” the democratic nominee. Foust, Myers, and Waltner are all, in my opinion, progressive candidates, and, while Foust is the best known and has the most union and prominent Democratic support by far, the other two would be good Congressmen. Dahlkemper, in the Slippery Rock forum, did not support the progressive cause. On Social Security, for example, while the others called for a raising of the cap, she spoke of some nebulous conference of stake holders, without proposing any semblance of a solution. She is also of the opinion that her business experience is an asset. In my experience, that is code for anti-worker.
The problem with Foust is he seems to be doing nothing more than riding on his family name and a handful of endorsements. He is also pure politician and I think the people are tired of that. He has barely raised enough money to take a stab at the primary. When it comes time for the run against English he will be trounced.
Waltner has a lot of support but it is mostly ouside of the county and they don’t vote. Myers just seems to be lackluster, I really don’t think he stands a chnce in the primary itself.
Just because Dahlkemper is a small business owner with her husband does not make her anti-worker. With 3 offices opened, a substantial war chest and a strong desire to change the staus quo, I think she has the best shot of unseating English.
Correction, I meant to say that Waltner’s support is from outside of the district. Being purely a progressive garners wonderful support from other progressives but the voting population is made up of a lot of different viewpoints. I think Waltner will get the progressive vote but that would not win him the primary.
The fact that Mrs. Dahlkemper provides healthcare coverage to her employees in a field that by a wide majority doesn’t, suggests a position quite the opposite of “anti-worker.”
